Veronica Hackett Bellows-Green passed away peacefully on July 12th, 2026, at the Western Long Term Care, surrounded with love and faith and blanketed with care by the angels of the Bayside Unit and Dr. Bob Young.
Veronica was one of the last remaining descendants of Michael and Elizabeth Hackett, members of the original Hackett family who settled on Woods Island, Bay of Islands, Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) in the early 1900s. She was the last surviving child of Mary and William Hackett and sister to Dorothy (Tim), Francis (Leslie), Ray (Francis), Pat (Noreen), Bridget (Ron), and Ben (Cedella).
In her early years, Veronica worked at Goodyear and House and dedicated herself to caring for others as a Blue Aid, a role known today as a nurse’s assistant. Her compassionate nature and strong work ethic were a testament to the kindness, dedication, and strength of character that defined her throughout her life.
On December 5, 1956, Veronica married Jim Bellows, and together they raised 12 children. Sadley, Jim passed away when Veronica was only 42 years old, leaving her with seven children still living at home, including a two-year-old. Drawing on the strength, resilience, and determination that were deeply rooted in her family heritage, Veronica carried on the legacy of the Bellows Store on Carmen Avenue in Corner Brook, NL.
To generations of children on the “West Side”, she was simply and affectionately known as "Mrs. Bellows." She embodied love, compassion, generosity, and pride in every life she touched. More than a storekeeper, she was a mother figure, friend, counselor, and source of comfort and faith to many.
Bellows Store was a haven for the community. With its door wide open on warm summer days and the hand-knit mittens and vamps made by Veronica and her sister Fay displayed for sale in the windows, gently swaying from their strings, the store was much more than a corner store, it was a gathering place where neighbours met, children lingered, and everyone felt at home. Through countless acts of kindness, Veronica made every person who walked through her door feel valued, welcomed, and loved.
Children eagerly ran to her with their report cards, their cuts and scrapes, and requests to have their popsicle split so they could have two instead of one. She was also the keeper of the treasured one-cent candy. Often selling them as "two for one”, she admired the children’s excitement of reaching inside and discovering more candy in the small brown paper bag than they thought their pennies could buy - a simple joy that many still remember fondly.
Veronica closed Bellows Store in 1997 and sold the building to the Corner Brook Women's Centre. She, along with her family, took great pride in knowing that a place built on a foundation of hard work, strength, compassion, and love would continue to serve the community as a safe and supportive space for women, mothers, and children. The store that had welcomed generations of families would go on to provide hope, comfort, and support to those who needed it most, a legacy that reflected the very values Veronica embodied throughout her life.
Later that same year, she married Harold Green, known affectionately as "Mr. Green" or "Pop". Together, they enjoyed a happy retirement in Pasadena, where they became familiar faces at community events, dances, church services, and social gatherings. Their shared love of family, faith, and community continued to enrich the lives of those in that community as well for many years.
Veronica's legacy of love, kindness, resilience, and generosity lives on through her twelve children: Donna (John), Joan (Norman), Anne (Roland), Gwen (Rick), Laura (Leonard), Tom (Iona), Carla (Sean), George (Rhonda), Jim (Anne), Paul (Gwen), Karen (Jim), Chris (Melanie) and Chris Green.
She was a devoted grandmother to Jim (Vanessa), Keith, Veronica (Robbie), John Paul (Kelli), Marion (James), Norm Jr. (Pamela), Marc (Melanie), Kelly (Rob), Roland (Meghan), Dale (Randi), Sabrina (Corey), Jonathan (Crystal), Katherine/”Taff”, Tony (Glenda), Marion Frances, Cody (Carrie), Gerard, TJ (Megan), Jeremy, Theo, Ethan, and Avery.
She was a proud great-grandmother to Deanna, Dylan, Liam, Broden, Adrienne, Adam, Callum, Beatrice, Gabriel Warrick, Nathaniel, Taylor, Trevor, Rachel, Brandon, Brook, Cameron, Stephen, Michelle (Scott), James (Kiarra), Samantha, Austin, Robin, Gracie, Landon, Wyatt, Jake, Jessie, Lincoln, Parker, Ender, Jacob, Noah, Brooklyn, Bradie, Nevaeh, Rowan, Emma, Tristan, MacKenzie, Olivia, Alex, Kelsler, Gabriel, Oaklynn, Travis, Morenzie, Denise, Jamie, and Riley.
She was also a cherished great-great-grandmother to Alexander, Daniel, Brantley, Jack, Malcom, Evelyn and Asher.
Veronica was predeceased by her beloved husbands, Jim Bellows and Harold Green; her son-in-law, Rick House; her grandson-in-law, Rick Cheeseman; her parents, Mary and William Hackett; her six siblings; her cherished grandchildren, Adam, Emily, Makayla, Connor and Hector; and her dear friend and neighbour, Eileen Campbell.
To her family, Veronica was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother whose unwavering devotion, wisdom, and compassion shaped generations. To her community she was a trusted friend, caring neighbour, and constant source of kindness and comfort. Her life was a testament to strength, resilience, faith, generosity, and unconditional love. Through her warmth, gentle spirit, and steadfast care for others, she touched countless lives and left an enduring legacy that extends far beyond her family. Though she will be deeply missed, her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her, and in the generations whose lives were enriched by her remarkable example.
There will be a visitation taking place for family and friends at Country Haven Funeral Home on July 14th, 2026 from the hours of 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will take place at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, July 15th, 2026 in the Country Haven Chapel with Father Terry officiating. Interment to take place at a later date.
