Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Rupert William Hare, age 93 at Golden Meadows Long Term Care, Calder Health Care Center, Burgeo, NL.

Rupert learned about good work ethic from a very young age. From the age of 13, whether he was herding cows before school or helping his father in their family store , he was no stranger to labor. First alongside his father, and then in partnership with his brother Victor, they built a business that spanned seven decades. Hare Enterprises sold pretty much everything you needed and then some. He loved his job –especially talking to the customers – making memories and friendships that lasted a lifetime.

Outside his work, Rupert was just as passionate about life. He loved his family and made sure they were well taken care of. He also relished a good hunting trip and accumulated many interesting stories in the country. Once his children moved on, he enjoyed the cabin and trailer life with Marge - especially gardening. He enjoyed travelling and had a great circle of friends which all made for an exciting life.

Rupert will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his daughters Bernice (Bruce), Debbie (Brad), son Darrell, grandchildren Sasha, Erik (Abby) and his precious great grandchild Ruth. He also leaves behind his brother Victor Jr., brother-in-law Claude (Joyce) and a large circle of nieces, nephews and friends.

He was predeceased by his wife Marge, his parents Alma and Victor Sr., sister Debbie, brother Norman, sisters-in-law Anne, Harriet, May and Thelma, brothers-in-law Arthur and Hubert.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to all of the staff at Calder Health Care Center who helped in any way to make Rupert’s stay more comfortable – especially those who brought a smile to his face.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, August 19th from 1:00 – 2:30pm at Faith United Church, Burgeo. A celebration of life will follow at 3:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Faith United Church (Burgeo) or Daffodil Place (St. John’s) would be greatly appreciated.

“Your life was a testament to the power of a father’s love. Rest in peace, Dad, knowing that your legacy will endure through the lives you touched.”
