It is with heavy hearts that the family of Ron McCarthy announce his passing on February 1, 2021, at the Caribou Memorial Veteran Pavilion, St. John's. Ron was born on March 6, 1944, in St. John's and grew up in Lourdes, Flat Bay and St. George's. He attended St. Bonaventure's College and excelled in basketball and track and field. He was a skilled tradesman in Machinist, Welding, and Heavy-Duty Mechanics. He worked with Flintkote and Western Construction on the West Coast, and with the Come-by-Chance Oil Refinery - "If a part needed to be made he could make it." He was a valued member of the St. George's Fire Department, Lion's Club, the Royal Canadian Legion and St. John Ambulance. He was an avid community volunteer in many capacities. Ron was predeceased by his father, Michael McCarthy, of St. Jacques and mother, Isabel Warren of St. John's, wife Johanna (Gabriel) of St George's and also Carolyn Petersen of Burgoyne's Cove. He leaves to mourn one sister Rosemary (Mike) Finn of St. John's; brothers Jim (Theresa) McCarthy of St. Philip's, and Mike (Terri) McCarthy of Bowmanville, ON. Daughters Patsy (Bill) Morris of Kelligrews, Tracey McCarthy of Burlington, Ontario, step-daughter Susan (Jerry) Penney of St. Philip's. Nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. At Ron's request, cremation has taken place. A celebration of Ron's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Royal Canadian Legion – Pleasantville Branch 56, P.O. Box 175, St. John's, NL A1C 5J2. Interment will take place at Burgoyne's Cove.
