Phyllis Patience
Sharpe
August 14, 1931 – March 14, 2026
A beautiful soul leaves behind a trail of beautiful memories and there was never a more beautiful soul than that of Phyllis Sharpe (Dawe). Phyllis was born August 14, 1931 on Sandy Point, St. George's Bay to the late Ernest and Marjorie Dawe. Phyllis passed away on March 14, 2026 at the Western Long Term Care facility in Corner Brook at the age of 94 years with her family holding her hand.
Phyllis is predeceased by her husband Raymond Sharpe, brother Allan Dawe and sisters Noreen Noseworthy and Marian Matthews.
Phyllis leaves to mourn with fond and deeply cherished memories her eight children; Cathy, John, Darryl, Marion, Raye (Brian Collins), Susan (Mike Whalen), Donna and Lisa. She also leaves to mourn 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
If only one word could be used to describe mom, it would be selfless. She exemplified this trait on a level that was truly remarkable. She was a mother who always put herself last. Her children were her life and later in years, she demonstrated the same love and commitment to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. The term 'she'd give you the shirt off of her back' captures the essence of who she was. Doing for others is what made her happy, whether it was babysitting her grandchildren, delivering her delicious homemade bread and lassie buns to family and friends, or helping out with many church activities. She had a sense of gratitude that was so lovely to witness, always thankful for the smallest of gestures. She was also known for her quick wit and sense of humour. Once when she was asked who she would call in case of emergency she replied, "Ghostbusters"!
As her children and grandchildren grew up, mom was afforded some well-deserved free time and it was then that she discovered the sport of cross-country skiing. She spent every winter (until well into her 80's) at the Blow Me Down Cross Country Ski trails in Corner Brook. There, she was affectionately known as one of the 'Gazebo Gang', a group of close friends who gathered on weekends on the trails. Every Saturday, this fun-loving group would ski to the gazebo, nestled in the heart of the trail system and cook on a woodstove and serve up toutons, beans, soups and stews to fellow skiiers. It was the absolute highlight of her week! Their popularity gathered momentum until it became a weekend tradition that fellow skiers enjoyed for many, many years. Eventually, the group even made it into the magazine, The Downhomer. She often said winter was her favourite season. These were some of mom's most cherished memories.
Mom was also active in her church. She especially enjoyed the socials that took place after church service and there you could find her in the kitchen serving congregation members tea and baked goods.
Mom would most certainly want special mention made to Dr. D. Coleman, who was her family physician for decades, up until his retirement. She spoke so fondly of him throughout the years and of his dedication to his profession.
The family would like to make special mention of Renee and Keith Sherstobetoff who were always only a phone call away. Your generosity of spirit and hospitality will always be remembered by the family. There was peace of mind knowing that others were there to help out in times of need. Thanks also to the staff of Stillwater's House at Western Long Term Care in Corner Brook, especially to Corrine Hull (Resident Care Coordinator) for your professionalism, kindness and attention you so willingly provided to mom, especially in these last few weeks. The family is forever grateful.
Our hearts are broken to say good-bye to this remarkable woman, but we are forever grateful to have been blessed with such a beautiful and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. You can rest in peace now mom. We will cherish the wonderful memories and most certainly your fun-loving spirit.
As expressions of sympathy, friends may donate to the Altzheimer's Society of Newfoundland & Labrador or to St. John the Evangelist Church in Corner Brook, NL.
In keeping with mom's wishes, cremation has taken place. A notice of funeral services will be announced at a later date.
Your mother is always with you.
She's the whisper of the leaves as you walk down the street, she's the smell of certain foods you remember, flowers you pick, the fragrance of life itself.
She's the cool hand on your brow when you're not feeling well, she's your breath in the air on a cold winter's day.
She is the sound of the rain that lulls you to sleep, the colours of a rainbow, she is Christmas morning.
Your mother lives inside your laughter.
She's the place you came from, your first home, and she's the map you follow with every step you take.
She's your first love, your first friend, and nothing on earth can separate you. Not time, not space.....not even death.
