Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Lionel Neil Beck announce his passing at the Western Long-Term Care on Wednesday, April 1st, 2026 at the age of 84 years. He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories, his children: Lori Bailey (Greg), Chris Gillis, and Kenny Gillis; grandchildren: Landon Gillis, Samantha Jane Gillis, Nathan Attwood, Amy Attwood, Nicholas Bailey, Calista Bailey, Spencer Bailey, Shana Clarke, and Donna Gillis; great-grandchildren: Phoenix, Luna, and Aurora; siblings: Sheila Braden, and Wilfred Beck; and sisters-in-law: Diane Beck, and Olga Beck; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

Neil was predeceased by his beloved wife, Jane Beck (Abbott); his parents, Heber and Dorcas Beck; his parents-in-law, Thomas and Patricia Abbott; his siblings Jessie, Rowena, Sylvia, Ross, Franklin, Derek, and Jim; his siblings-in-law Thelma Beck, Max Carberry, and Fred Carberry; and his brothers-in-law from Jane's family, Jim and Tony.

Neil's passing brings both sadness and comfort. After losing his wife nearly 20 years ago, he carried that grief with him for the rest of his life. Even in recent years, as his health declined and his memory began to fade, there were still moments when that loss would bring him to tears. We are comforted in knowing he is now at peace, reunited with the love of his life.

Neil will be remembered for his sharp sense of humor, his quick wit, and the playful way he teased those he loved. He was full of wisecracks and enjoyed poking fun, bringing laughter to those around him.

Later in life, Neil made the decision to return to university, where he earned his degree — a true reflection of his determination and commitment to personal growth. He went on to build a meaningful career with the Humber Valley Community Development Association, where he worked closely with individuals with disabilities. He was passionate about ensuring they were given the same rights and opportunities as anyone else, particularly the right to meaningful work. Neil was dedicated to helping find suitable employment and supports for those in his care, and he approached this work with compassion, respect, and genuine concern for each individual. He cared deeply for his clients, and his impact on their lives will not be forgotten.

Neil and Jane shared many happy years together, with some of their most cherished times spent living in their home at George's Lake and at their cottage in the Highlands of Newfoundland. These places held special meaning for them and were filled with memories of love, laughter, and time spent together.

In following Neil's wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be no formal visitation or funeral service at this time. Interment to take place at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Neil's memory to the Diabetes Canada (https://diabetes.ca/) or the Alzheimer's Society of Canada (https://alzheimer.ca/).

The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the doctors, nurses, and staff of the WLTC-4th Floor-Valleyview Unit for their kindness, compassion, and support shown to our dear loved one during his time of need.
