Mima Myrtle
Penney-Revised
December 6, 1931 – June 10, 2024
Passed away peacefully on June 10th, 2024 at the Corner Brook Palliative Care Unit, Mima Penney (nee. Wilton) 92, of Corner Brook.
Born in Woody Point in 1931, Mima and her family moved to Steady Brook when she was just a young girl so her father could work on construction of the road from Corner Brook to Deer Lake. Her family opened and ran the community store in Steady Brook for many years. In her late teens, Mima met her future husband, Phonse, and they married in 1954. When finished high school, she attended Memorial University to pursue her love of teaching. She taught in Gallants, Humbermouth, and Westmount School in Corner Brook, until starting her family in 1955 and becoming a full-time mom. Once her family was raised, Mima returned to work at Sears and worked there until 1990, enjoying many friendships and good times with her colleagues.
Mima loved gardening – she had a beautiful garden at her home in Corner Brook and a vegetable garden in Sandy Lake, where she and Phonse spent much of their time during retirement. She loved quilting, baking, reading, and entertaining her friends and family at their home on O'Connell Drive. Mima's life was her family, and they loved her dearly. She travelled extensively with her children and grandchildren across Canada to Florida, Europe, China, and the Caribbean.
She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories, her children: Sharon (Graham Penney), Alphonse Jr., Greg (Lisa Wells), and Bert (Elizabeth); grandchildren: Erin (Peter Walker), Kristen (Matthew Strong), Robyn (Kyle McGivery), Jordan (Abby Poole), Aisha (Jordan Kennedy), R.J., Jamie (Taylor Ryan), Tyler, and Jeremy; great-grandchildren: Jasper, Jensen, Nora, Ellen, Gwen, and Rylie; her brother with whom she shared a special bond: Claude Wilton (Helen Madore); sisters: Winnifred Pretty, and Georgina Trenchard; and sister-in-law: Kay Wilton; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
Mima is predeceased by her husband: Alphonse; parents: Hedley and Elizabeth Wilton; her brothers: William Wilton (Betty), and Robert Wilton (Amy); mother and father-in-law: Gwen (Butt) and Bert Penney; special sisters-in-law: Ramona Woolridge (Ray), and Ulah Wilton; and brothers-in-law: Bob Pretty, and Ted Trenchard.
As per Mima's wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be a visitation taking place at Country Haven Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 7th, 2024 from the hours of 7-9 PM, from where the funeral service will take place on Thursday, August 8th, 2024 in the Country Haven Funeral Home Chapel at 2 PM with Rev. John van Vliet officiating. Interment to follow at Mount Patricia Cemetery.
The family would like to thank Dr. Melissa O'Brien and Karen Ellsworth and the staff of Mountain View Retirement Home for their kindness and care over the years. They would also like to thank the excellent staff of the Corner Brook Palliative Care Unit including the nurses, support staff, and Dr. Lafferty, Dr. White, and Dr. Dunn. Your compassion and care will not be forgotten.
As expressions of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Mima's memory to the Western Regional Hospital Foundation-Palliative Care Unit.
