Obituary

With heavy hearts and grateful memories, we announce the passing of Michael Patrick Meaney, born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, on February 5, 1929, to Dora M. Cashin and John H. Meaney (both deceased).

Dad's early life took a sharp turn when his father passed away when he was nine. He grew up fast, leaving school after Grade 9 to help support his family. But where formal education ended, life's classroom took over—and Dad aced it with charm, wit, and determination.

At 18, armed with natural salesmanship ("some fellas got it, some fellas don't") and a generous laugh, Dad set out along the rugged coast of Newfoundland, selling goods for National Wholesalers. His chartered boat took him from Corner Brook to the Northern Peninsula, Baie Verte, Springdale, Twillingate, Fogo, and beyond, where he built lasting relationships and gathered stories that shaped his character and opened his mind.

In these early adult years, Dad began to challenge some of the more rigid views of his very deep faith. He came to the realization that some rules of faith were better applied as guidelines—especially those that divided people and communities along religious lines. He felt much better when he relied on empathy for others to guide faith-based decisions, and in turn invited us to think for ourselves.

Dad's career led him into insurance with Prudential Life and later Standard Life, serving families across Newfoundland's west coast. Mid-career, he pivoted again—this time into financial planning, even relocating to Toronto for a short time to complete the Canadian Securities Course. He began a successful career in investments with IG Wealth Management. Not surprisingly, Dad loved all things money—earning it, advising on it, saving it, and teaching others to save it.

Dad was deeply involved in community service—volunteering with the Rotary Club, Meals on Wheels, and the Newfoundland and Labrador Hockey Association. He served as Honorary Chair of the Salvation Army's Red Shield Appeal. "They do good work," he'd say. To this day, we never pass a Christmas Kettle without a generous donation.

While Dad was passionate about hockey, there was no money for skates when he was growing up. But a baseball glove found its way into his hands. And he had enough talent to suit up for the Corner Brook Barons. It even gave him the chance to court a girl from St. John's. He met Mary Ryan in the early 1950s, she on a summer trip to Corner Brook having previously worked aboard the floating clinics (Christmas Seal) that provided medical services to isolated Newfoundland communities. They first connected at Margaret Bowater Park, a local swimming hole in Corner Brook. Whether it was their similar adventurous work plying the coastal waters of Newfoundland, or Dad's invitation to watch him play ball, they started dating soon after. They married in 1955 and over the years raised five children: John (Debbie), Wynne Anne (Joe), Michelle (Bob), Donna (Brent), and Catherine (Michael).

Dad also leaves behind five grandchildren, Brad, Samantha, Jake, Hannah, and Andrew, and great-granddaughter Blake—each of whom carries a bit of his good humour.

In 2016, Dad and Mom moved to Halifax to be closer to their "girls," but in spirit, neither ever left Newfoundland. To his last days, Dad introduced himself proudly as "Mike Meaney from Corner Brook, Newfoundland" to anyone he met.

The family would like to thank the staff at Parkland at the Lakes (Kinross and Lewis Hall) for their support and kindness during dad's time there. We would also like to thank Northwood Ivany in Bedford specifically the Maritime Hills team for their care and attention to dad's needs over the last year and a half and for creating an all-important family environment for their residents. And lastly Dr. Barry Clarke, Dalhousie Family Medicine, for care oversight and for his ability to meet dad wherever he was on his health journey with humour and compassion.

Cremation has taken place. A joint celebration of life for both Mike and Mary will be held in 2026 in Corner Brook.
