It is with great sadness that the family of Loretta "Leila" Brake announce her passing at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital in her 90th Year. She will be missed by her family: Denis (Susan), Ann Marie (Brian), Gerard, Michael, Padraic, Stephan and Stephanie (Clyde); six grandchildren: Michael (Vicki) and Jennifer, Brian Roy and Richard, Denis (Rebecca), Adam and one great-grandchild: Chloe; Sister: Vera Dingman, and half-brothers: Ambrose, Kenny and Gregory. Leila is predeceased by her husband Howard Patrick Brake, 31 Jan 2007, daughter: Denise and half brothers: Michael and David.

Born in Tompkins and raised in the 'Valley.' Leila and her sister were soon to experience grief too early when their mother passed when she was seven and her sister just five.  Leila and her sister were sent to boarding school in St. George's where her love of reading began.  She excelled at school and received sponsorship from the Sisters of Mercy to attend Memorial University. She met Howard after University and with his career in the railway, moved and lived around Newfoundland from the Gaff Topsails to Doyles. She never forgot her time in university and placed within all her children, the importance of a higher education. She had many loves in her life, her husband, her eight children and reading.  She thought the best gift was a new book, whether it was a book of NL history or a biography, she never stopped reading.  Her hobbies were many, an avid stamp collector, a constant quilter, an amateur photographer, a lover of all berries and always ready to talk politics.  She will be missed.

Visitations will take place at Country Haven Funeral Home, 167 Country Road, on Wednesday, October 30, 2024 from the hours of 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM, and again on Thursday, October 31st, 2024 from the hours of 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. The funeral mass will take place at 1 PM on Friday, November 1st, 2024 at the Sacred Heart Parish, Curling with Father Lee Lainey officiating. Interment to follow at Mount Patricia Cemetery.
