Mary, Mom, Nano passed away peacefully on a Thursday evening in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, with her adoring family by her side. She was 91—or 89, if you believed the age she had been telling the world, including Dad, since 1953.
Mom was born in St. John’s, NL, to Thomas Ryan Sr. of St. John’s and Catherine (Kit) Brennan of Ship Cove. She loved her hometown of St. John’s— the waterfront, Water and Duckworth streets, Quidi Vidi, the Gut, and her many other haunts. She had a solid group of girlfriends, many as adventurous as she, and it was with them on her summer vacation to Corner Brook that she met Dad.
Mom loved her work outside the home. As a young woman, working gave her the ability to help out at home following the unexpected death of her father. And it gave her independence, which she deeply treasured. Her work at Fort Pepperrell Air Force Base in St. John’s was memorable and demanding in the best of ways. It was a vibrant environment that allowed her to meet people from all across North America— and buy herself a seal coat! She also worked aboard the floating clinics (Easter Seals), circumnavigating Newfoundland and Labrador while providing health care to isolated communities. She eventually moved on and completed her career with the federal government in Corner Brook, a job that allowed her to continue working while raising a family of five.
We have so many fond memories of her role as a wife, mother, and member of the community, including racing home from work to pick us kids up to make the trek to Pasadena Beach for a late afternoon swim. She cherished her friendships – at work, bridge, golf. She contributed quietly to her community and believed in doing every job well. Her other remarkable talent was that she was always right.
Mom and Dad moved from Corner Brook to Dartmouth in the spring of 2016 to be closer to their four girls, following many years of love and attention given to them by their only boy, John. We girls could not have been happier. This move was a gift to us, and we cherished the adventures and family gatherings that followed - country drives, beach time, pool time. Mom was a lifelong swimmer. Being by or in the water sustained her.
While Mom had a few health challenges in the last years of her life, she faced them with dignity and determination. We are thankful for the attention her new community gave her - from the staff at Parkland at the Lakes to Dr. Barry Clarke. All were thoughtful and caring.
Mary leaves behind her husband of 63 years, Mike, her son John (Debbie), daughters Wynne Anne (Joe), Michelle (Bob), Donna (Brent), Catherine (Mike), and grandchildren Bradley, Samantha, Jake, Hannah, and Andrew, and great-granddaughter, Blake, born just after she passed away.
Mom was predeceased by her four brothers, Tom Jr., Jack, Mick, and Jim of St. John’s, and her sister Patsy Goobie of White Rock, BC, and her parents.
A memorial service for Michael and Mary Meaney will take place at Country Haven Funeral Home, 167 Country Road, Corner Brook. NL, on Thursday, July 16th, 2026, at 12:00 PM, followed by a reception from 1:30-3:00 PM. A private interment service to take place at Mount Patricia Cemetery in their family plot.
