It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of the late Mary Eileen Companion announce her peaceful passing at Western Memorial Regional Hospital on Thursday, July 16, 2026, at the age of 90 years. Mary lived a full and meaningful life, rooted in family, faith, hard work, and the simple joys that brought people together. She leaves to mourn her devoted children: son Blaine (Sadie); daughters Colleen (Harold), Susan (Jean), and Cindy (Sam); grandchildren Jessica (Saul) and Jonathon Welsh, Danielle Russell (Sam), Jean Luc and Madeleine Bisaillon, and Rachael, Ian, and Lauren Davis; and great-grandchildren Seb and Spencer Maynard and Collins Russell.
Mary is also lovingly remembered by her extended King family, Gerald Companion (Susan), Mary Companion-Batt; Marion Hynes, long-time friend Pricilla Boutcher and the many relatives and friends whose lives she touched.
Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband, Leo Companion; her parents, Leo and Sarah (Humber) Hynes; her brothers Peter (Hilda), Albert (Mary), and Joseph (Margaret); her sisters Dorothy (William) and Rose Short (Clayton); Raymond; her loving friend and partner, Edward King and her Companion family members.
Born on Woods Island, Mary carried with her throughout her life the strength, warmth, and close-knit spirit of the community that shaped her early years. When she relocated to Corner Brook to raise her family, she built a loving home grounded in care, resilience, and devotion. Mary had a strong faith in God, and this faith guided her every day, giving her strength, comfort, and purpose throughout her life. Mary worked at Eaton’s and BJ Flowers until her retirement, where she was known for her kindness, reliability, and friendly nature. She also gave generously of her time as a volunteer at the O’Connell Centre, Corner Brook Long Term Care and the Western Memorial Regional Hospital, reflecting her lifelong commitment to helping others. Mary found immense joy. in baking, playing cards, tending her garden, and gathering with family and friends. Her life was rich in love, connection, and service, and she leaves behind a legacy of faith, kindness, strength, and deep devotion to those she loved.
Cremation has taken place. Friends and family are invited to visit on Monday, July 20th 2026 at Country Haven Funeral Home for a visitation at 1:00 pm, followed by a service at 3:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Father Edward Terry officiating. Interment to follow at Mount Patricia Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, there are no flowers by request, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to one’s choice.
The family extends sincere thanks to the staff at Western Memorial Regional Hospital for the compassionate care provided to Mary, with special appreciation to the staff in the ICU.
