Martin
O'Connell
January 31, 1949 – February 27, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that the family of the late Martin O'Connell announce his passing at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital on Friday, February 27th, 2026, at the age of 77 years. Martin passed peacefully surrounded by his loving family and friends, who spent much of their time by his side over the last several months.
Martin leaves to mourn his loving family; his son: Darrell Martin; sisters: Caroline (Gus), Anita (Danny), and Maxine; and sisters-in-law: Shirley O'Connell, and Sandra O'Connell; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, extended relatives, and many, many friends. Martin was cared for by his special niece: Lisa O'Connell; and his life-long friend: Howard Gallant; who both selflessly gave their time to ensure that he had everything he needed.
Martin was predeceased by his parents: John and Kathleen O'Connell; brothers: William, Lorne, Jerry, Alphonsus, and Mike; sisters: Catherine, and Bernetta; brother-in-law: Jim; and sisters-in-law: Rita, and Mame.
Martin had a large group of friends, many of whom dropped by for a coffee and a chat. He was always known for his funny sense of humour and making people laugh. He was also known to be a hard ticket and enjoyed giving a "wet willy" or two. Martin always enjoyed a trip back to his birthplace, Wood's Island. He had many wonderful memories there with family and friends. He could be seen at any time of the day driving on quad greeting everyone throughout the community.
In following Martin's wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be no formal visitation or funeral service at this time. Interment to take place at 11:30 AM on Tuesday, March 3rd, 2026, at the Old Roman Catholic Cemetery in Benoit's Cove. As expressions of sympathy, a donation can be made in Martin's memory to a charity of one's choice.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the WMRH-floor 4C for their care and kindness shown to Martin during his time of need.
