Obituary

It is with tremendous heartbreak and sadness, the family of Kevin James Atkinson announce his peaceful passing, Saturday January 15th at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John's.

A loving husband to Rita and adoring father to Carolyn and Jackie, Kevin died at age 85, following a brief illness.

Kevin was born in Herring Neck but spent most of his life in Corner Brook. Those who knew him, valued his great sense of humour, affectionate smile and pleasant demeanour. Kevin was a big sports fan. He cheered on the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Blue Jays. He watched boxing, darts and curling on TV.

He also enjoyed puttering around outdoors; mowing, snow blowing, trimming, planting, fixing, rigging-up just about anything and everything. Kevin loved traditional music, he loved a bit of fun and he loved to dance.

He will be truly missed by his unwavering devoted wife of 60 years, Rita; daughters Carolyn (Terry) Mount Pearl, Jackie (Dave) Halifax, Nova Scotia; grandchildren Adam Good (Erin) Halifax, Nova Scotia, Stephanie Munro (Matthew) Halifax, Nova Scotia; step-grandchildren Jenn Canning and Chris Winsor; his brother Ted (Ena) Corner Brook; sister-in-law Theresa MacLean (Gord) Ottawa, Ontario and numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Kevin is predeceased by his first-born baby daughter, Karen Marie; his parents Frederick and Rosalie Atkinson; brothers Jack and Arthur; sister Minnie Cutler; in-laws Frances and Bert Williams and sister-in-law Frances Williams.

Kindness and compassion should never go unnoticed especially in times of sorrow. Special thanks to the doctors, nurses, and health care workers at Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook, Health Sciences Centre in St. John's and both Bishop Gardens Seniors Living and Glenbrook Lodge long term care facility in St. John's.

Thank you to our friends, family and neighbours. Your generosity and love have supported us through this difficult time and for that, we are forever grateful.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to a charity of one's choice in his honor.
