Obituary

On behalf of myself, Joe's family, and his extended family of care givers; we would like to extend our sincerest thank you to all who helped us to celebrate Joe and help alleviate our sorrow in the loss of our dear brother and friend. We all feel a profound absence in our life and cannot express our gratitude enough, to all that came by the funeral home for the celebration of his life, and to attend the funeral service. To all those who dropped off food and cards, sent flowers, took time to visit us at home, sent us a text message, or dropped a note to us on Facebook. We are eternally grateful for each and every gesture. Our deepest gratitude to Sister Kay and Barbara Hickey for the beautiful music. Barb, your beautiful voice is one we will always remember. Father Lee Lainey for his incredible service and homily that captured Joe's true essence, and to Robyn LeDrew for helping us plan the service. We would also like to offer a thank you to the doctors, nurses, paramedics, and social workers of Western Health for the care given to Joe over the years. There have been many that have been involved in his care and attended to him at home and in the hospital. Thank you to all. We would be remiss if we did not mention Dwayne Parsons and his staff at Country Haven. They have always been beyond kind and loving to Joe in their interactions with him, and this continued with his passing. Joe was shown an abundance of compassion by them and we will forever be grateful to you.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

On April 15th 2024 Joseph "Joe" Companion passed peacefully away at Western Memorial Regional Hospital in his 58th year.  Joe was surrounded by so much love and compassion by his family and his extended family of caregivers. Joe leaves behind with many fond and loving memories his siblings: Valerie (Sherwin), Arlene (Chuck) Sandra, Delores (Paul), Alphonsus (Karen), Mary, Gerri (Dave), Ben, Peter (Adrianne), Anne (Darren), Viola (Brad), and Will (Tina); his 20 nieces and nephews; 11 great nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.

Joe was predeceased by his mom and dad, Joseph Valmour and Isabel Compagnon; his brothers: Garland, and Michael; and his grandparents: Loyola and Geraldine Compagnon, and Charles and Agnes Hackett.

Joe had a wonderful personality, he loved to laugh and joke, plays tricks on you and try his best to embarrass you, no matter where he was. When out around with Joe you had best be ready to stop a few times to chat because he knew so many and he called them all "my friend." Joe loved to work and be busy whether it was shoveling a driveway when he was capable of it, to taping a piece of wood and turning it into his own portable computer/writing desk. He could tape anything and turn it into a work of art. The last few years Joe has found his voice and his own expression through the love and support of a wonderful group of care givers. He loved his staff and they loved him.  He called them all his "best friend" and he depended on them so much and it was clear to see they were his family.  Joe found an amazing relationship with his house manager Tim, who he affectionately called "Old Man." Tim treated Joe like a son and we knew that Joe was in very good hands.  He loved all of you so dearly and there is no way we could ever thank you enough for being Joe's family and for loving him and respecting him the way you did.

At Joe's request, cremation has taken place. There will be a visitation held at Country Haven Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 17th, 2024 from the hours of 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM, from where the funeral service will take place at 1 PM on Thursday, April 18th, 2024 in the Country Haven Chapel with Father Lee Lainey officiating. Interment to follow at the NEW Roman Catholic Cemetery in Benoit's Cove, NL. As expressions of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Joe's memory to the Janeway Children's Hospital.

"A gentle soul; forever loved"
