John "Jack" Joseph Thistle

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of John “Jack” Joseph Thistle, who passed away following a brief illness on Vancouver Island on August 8, 2026, at the age of 72.

Born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, on May 5, 1954, Jack spent much of his youth on Quarry Hill, where he forged many lifelong friendships. He was often up to mischief with his friends from Curling, creating stories and memories that would be retold for years to come.

Later, Jack made his way to Vancouver Island, where he settled and built a life of his own. Surrounded by the island’s beauty, he found happiness and created countless memories with his best friend, Gerald Penney, and other Newfoundlanders who had made their way west. Whether sharing a laugh, telling a story, fishing in Port Renfrew, or sitting around a simple campfire on the beach, Jack had a way of making every moment memorable.

He will be remembered for his independent spirit, the love he had for his family, his loyalty to his friends, and the smiles he brought to those who knew and loved him.

Jack is survived by his daughter, Deidre whom he loved dearly and was extremely proud of, and her mother, Deborah Day; his siblings, Marie (Tom) Daniels, Gloria (Albert) Liljemark, Laura (Dan) Penney, Gary (Elaine) Thistle, Joanne (Brian) George, Gerald Thistle, and Helen (Scotland); his brother-in-law, Tom Winstone; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

He is also survived by his best friend, Gerald Penney, and the Penney family, who were like a second family to him, as well as special friends Dawn Twin, Lisa Sharpe, and Joy Malcolm.

Of special note are Gary and Elaine, who welcomed and cared for him whenever he returned to Corner Brook for extended visits. Along the way, he was always welcomed by Joanne and Brian, as well as his other siblings, before arriving home.

He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph (1998) and Margaret (1990) Thistle; his siblings, James (1966), Florence Winstone (2024), and David (2025).

Jack’s memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. He will be remembered with love and affection by all who knew him and by those whose lives were touched by his presence.

“Gone are the struggles of his life, forever held in our hearts.”
