Keith, Perry, & Dr. Paul Matthews would like to advise the community that our beloved sister, Dr. Jennifer Lynn Matthews (Miss Jennie), has suddenly and unexpectedly passed away. Jennie leaves behind three brothers: Keith (Pamela, Hr. Grace), Perry (Corner Brook), Paul (Toronto), and numerous family members; nieces, Sara Matthews (St. John's, great nephew Nicholas Lynch), Erin Matthews (Calgary); Uncle & Aunt Gilbert & Marilyn Smart (Corner Brook), Aunt Shirley Dyke (Corner Brook) & Great Aunt Eleanor Baird (St. John's); cousins: Drew Smart (Clare & family Dublin, IE), Tyler Smart (Rachel & family, Corner Brook), Julia Day (Adam & family, Stephenville), Bruce Dyke and family (Truro, NS), Glen Dyke (Linda, & family Dartmouth), Elizabeth Dyke (and family, Corner Brook), Doug Warren (Margaret, Stephenville), Jean Warren (Dennis, Comfort Cove), David Hynes (Suzanne, Toronto), and cousins of the Baird & the Vatcher families; as well as special family friends: Penny-Lou Yarn, Lisa St. Croix, Elizabeth Penney, & Jodi Long. Jennie also leaves behind her many valued friends, colleagues & students.

She is pre-deceased by her parents Byron & Jean Matthews, Grand parents William & Rita Matthews, and Gilbert & Hannah Smart-Loveridge.

Jennifer began her musical career in Corner Brook under the tutelage and care of the late Gary Graham and completed her Bachelor of Music at Acadia University. She then attended the University of Western Ontario where she studied under the likes of the renowned Ron Turini, former student of Maestro Vladimir Horowitz. Upon receiving her Masters degree, Jennie moved to New York and set up her practice where she worked with the late Norma Newton and many others of the musical community. After some years she returned to Canada and obtained her Doctorate of Music from McGill University in Montreal. She then returned to New York and obtained a position at the prestigious Hunter College.

In 2008, Jennie returned to Newfoundland and established a musical practice in St. John's, and in 2013 she returned to Corner Brook to set up her studio on West Street. Here she filled Corner Brook with the music of her students of all ages whom she adored, and she absolutely treasured her amazing network of friends. She was instrumental in the creation of the Bay of Islands Musical Arts Group and Choir, bringing to our area, concerts, and operas such as at Christmas, Handel's Messiah. She also was an accompanist for the Atlantic Boychoir since 2015 and was a part of their artistic staff.

We are overwhelmed and so very grateful for the outpour of condolences for the loss of our beloved sister, Jennie.

Cremation has taken place. There will be a visitation held at Country Haven Funeral Home on Saturday, November 12 ^th , 2022 and Sunday November 13 ^th , 2022 from the hours of 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will take place on Monday, November 14 ^th , 2022 at The Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist at 2 PM with Reverend P. Lynn Braye, Vicar Choral, officiating. Interment to follow at Mount Patricia Cemetery - United Church Section.
