Obituary

The family of the late James Raymond Whiteway (Poppy) would like to extend our sincere gratitude and thanks to all who visited us at the funeral home, our homes, made phone calls, sent emails, cards, food, and donations in our dad's memory. We would like to thank family and friends who traveled to be with us, and to those that could not be here; we know your hearts were with us.

A special thank you to Rev. Tanya White for your visits with dad, your support to our family and the beautiful service and tribute to dad's life. Thank you to all that were part of the service and for the immeasurable amounts of love and care that was shown during this time.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Dr. Wadhwa and all the nurses and docters at the palliative care unit for your kind and compassionate care, it will forever be remembered.

Thank you to Dwayne Parsons and the staff of Country Haven Funeral Home for your compassion shown during this difficult time.

Although we cannot thank everyone individually, please know your words have comforted us, your support has strengthened us, and your love has sustained us.

-Thank you from: Bernice, Gloria, John, and family.

It is with profound sadness that the family of James Raymond Whiteway (Poppy) announce his peaceful passing at the Palliative Care Unit in Corner Brook on March 21, 2023, at the age of 94.

He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his two daughters Bernice (Brian) King, Gloria (David) LaSaga and his son John Whiteway; sister Bernice Kesling, of Alabama, and brother John (Helen) Cashin; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends to whom he loved dearly.

James is predeceased by his wife Muriel Whiteway (Prosper); his sons, Charles and James Junior, daughter Ellie; parents William and Gertrude Whiteway; mother and father in-law Richard and Bertha Prosper; sisters, Ellie (Marty) Cashin, Jean (James) Hancock, Eileen (Meade) Cottingham and Rose (Boyd) Crewe; brothers Lloyd and William Jack Whiteway; brother in-law Bill Prosper, Murdock (Jean) Prosper, Eric Prosper, Hector (Eva) Prosper and grandson Jonathan Whiteway and his great-grandson Christopher Bishop.

Poppy took every opportunity to sing the Cowboy song and yodel to whomever was blessed to be in his presence.  He had a zest for life and just wanted everyone to be happy and do a random act of kindness when they could. It brought him no greater joy to see happiness in the ones he loved.

A special thank you to Dr. Wadhwa and all the nurses and doctors at the Palliative Care Unit for the loving care and compassion they gave our father.
