James "Jim" Henry Wells

It is with great sadness that the family announce the passing of James “Jim” Henry Wells at the Western Memorial Regional Hospital, Corner Brook, NL on September 16, 2026 at the age of 94.

Jim was the son of Stephen and Dorothy Wells of Cox’s Cove. He was a hard worker all of his life and enjoyed many years working in construction and forestry industry. He worked with Lundrigan’s in Corner Brook, owned Wells’ Lumbering for many years, was co-owner of grocery stores in Cox’s Cove and Meadows, and co-owner of Wells and Park Construction, thus providing employment for many of his friends and family over the span of his life time. He was well liked and respected by people who knew him and worked with him. Jim was a hands-on worker and worked side by side with his employees over the years.

In his earlier years he was known for his participation in talent shows, and singing Johnny’s Waterbed with his cowboy hat on. He took this very seriously and would insist his wife, Violet, help him practice for his performance. He was an Honorary Firefighter with the Cox’s Cove Volunteer Fire Department and called bingo when needed.

Jim is survived by his wife of 74 years, Violet (Bursey); his 4 children: Marvin (Judith), Pauline, Beverly (Stewart), and Bruce (Ivy); grandchildren: Shawna (Steven), Jimmy (Natasha), Stephen (Angie), Sandra, Shane (Dana), BJ (Nicole), Chantal (Victor), and Jillian (Matt); 16 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great grandchildren; and his siblings: Daisy, Terry (Evelyn), Byron (Ina), and Joan; as well as a very large circle of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

Jim was predeceased by his father: Stephen; mother: Dorothy; father-in law: Raymond Bursey (Flora); daughter: Marie; sisters: Betty (Wilfred) and Mona (Alex); and brothers; Dougal (Jessie), and Charles; and his sons-in-law; Cyril Wheeler and Basil Payne.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Diane Park, as his long-time caregiver, and to Jason Matthews who was like a son him. Also, a special thanks to Beatrice Cuff, whom we consider an honorary family member and who was a constant support during this sad time.

There will be a visitation taking place for family and friends at the Emmanuel Pentecostal Church, Cox’s Cove, NL, on Friday, September 18, 2026 from the hours of 7-9 PM, and again on Saturday, September 19, 2026 from the hours of 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will take place at 2 PM on Sunday, September 20, 2026 with Pastor Canning and Pastor Grimes officiating. Cremation to follow. Interment to take place at a later date.
