Heather Yvette
Hynes
March 16, 1981 – April 25, 2026
Heather Yvette Hynes (Banks Simms), born March 16, 1981, passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family and friends, after a brave and determined health battle. She leaves behind a legacy defined by kindness, resilience, and an unwavering love for those closest to her.
Heather was the devoted and proud mother of her beloved son, Charlie Allan Hynes, who was her greatest joy, her life’s purpose, and her guiding light. Everything she did was rooted in her love for Charlie, she was his biggest cheerleader, his constant support, and his safe place.
She was deeply cherished by her mother, Beverly Banks, and her father, Maurice Simms, whose steady love, guidance, and unwavering presence were a grounding force throughout her life, as well as by her supportive brother Ryan. Her Nan Katherine Wells and Pop Levi Patey were, and continue to be, sources of light and love to Heather and Charlie. She is also lovingly remembered by her half-siblings, Julia and Jeffrey. She will also be dearly missed by many friends and extended family whose lives she touched so deeply.
Predeceased by her Pop Allan Banks, her Nan Joan and Pop Reginald Simms, each of whom played a profound and shaping role in her life and were deeply loved by her. As well predeceased by her step-sister, Shayna.
A spirited child, full of life and a true ball of energy, Heather carried that vibrancy with her throughout her life. She always had creative projects on the go, bringing imagination, warmth, and meaning into everything she touched. From a young age, she also had a gift for making people laugh, her humour was effortless and comforting, and it became one of the many ways she connected with others.
Family was at the heart of everything for Heather. Her grandmothers held a particularly special place in her life, one who inspired her recent work in textile and fabric weaving, shaping her creative expression, and another who raised her with love and strength, and who stood beside both Heather and Charlie with unwavering support in recent years. Their influence, devotion, and love were foundational in shaping the woman Heather became.
Heather formed lifelong friendships and built a strong sense of community. She attended St. Anthony Elementary and Harriot Curtis Collegiate, where she became the dearest friend to many. Her many loyal friends were a reflection of the joy, kindness, and warmth she shared with everyone.
Heather graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (Dean's List) from the University of New Brunswick, beginning a career rooted in compassion and advocacy. Working in Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland, and pursuing dialysis nursing. She gave endlessly of herself, always striving to make life better for others. She worked as a Registered Nurse until she became ill in 2024. She was more than a nurse, she was a fierce advocate for her patients, as well as for mental health and women’s health. Even as she faced her own battles, she turned
her strength outward, advocating for others, sharing her voice with the Minister of Health, and working to improve screening so that others might be helped sooner.
Heather lived her life guided by her powerful mantras, “Keep Going” and “Still Here.” These words were not only expressions of her strength, but a reflection of how she faced every challenge, with courage, honesty, and determination. Kindness was at the very core of who she was. She believed deeply in its power and made it a priority to instill it in others, often ending her calls with Charlie with the simple but meaningful words, “I love you, be kind.”
Throughout her journey, Heather shared her insights with honesty and grace. She reminded those around her that growing old is a gift not to be taken for granted, that tomorrow is never promised, and that gratitude and grief can coexist. She encouraged others to speak, to be heard, and to help others be heard and continuing her lifelong commitment to lifting others up.
Through every stage of her journey, Heather remained selfless. She was deeply grateful for her care and never wanted to be a burden, often looking around the room to ensure others were okay before herself. Her strength was quiet but powerful, rooted in love and an enduring desire to make a difference.
A talented and award winning artisan, Heather was recognized for her creative work, including her beloved “Nan’s Mittens,” and "Wooly" sharing warmth, tradition, and love through her craft. She loved the outdoors and being in nature and often would find inspiration for her art in the woods, on the beach, wherever she traveled.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the healthcare team, especially Dr. Penney and family, for their compassion, care, and unwavering support throughout Heather’s journey. Heather was especially thankful for those who help supported with her beloved dog, Briggs.
Heather’s laughter, her radiant smile, and the light she brought into the lives of others will never be forgotten. Her legacy lives on in Charlie, in her family, and in all who knew and loved her.
May we carry forward her words and be kind to one another.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the late spring or summer of 2026, with further details to be shared a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the foundation Heather was establishing in her legacy to support single parents undergoing cancer treatment who require financial assistance for travel within Newfoundland and Labrador. Additional information will also be shared at a later date regarding the Heather Hynes Memorial Scholarship.
