Obituary

The family of Gregory Stephen Staples of Corner Brook, Newfoundland, would like to announce his passing on 13th February 2026 at the age of 79.  Greg passed peacefully at Western Memorial Hospital.

Greg was born on 27th April 1946 in Curling East, where from a young age he created a lot of mischief and was well known throughout the community.  He was very proud of his Curling roots.  Later in life, as he grew older, he enjoyed driving around the Bay of Islands with his children or his brother, John.  It always felt like he knew everyone, he had friends everywhere, no matter where we drove, he seemed to know somebody.  His greatest enjoyment was being with his children and grandchildren and kept everyone entertained with his quick wit, high spirit/foolishness, and humour. His hobbies included fishing and playing a good game of cards.  Greg attended his first Alcoholics Anonymous meeting in 1975 and was very proud of his sobriety for the last 40 plus years.

Greg worked for 30 years with the Laborers International Union Local 1208 and as a taxi driver in Corner Brook off and on for 50 years. He was very much a people person and loved meeting people of all walks of life while taxiing over the years. Oh the taxiing stories he could tell.

Greg was a devoted father and was at peace during his passing and only wanted the best for his children and family. He expressed in the last few days how he was so proud of each of his children and was happy that he had been able to spend some quality time with each of them over the last few years.  His only wish was that his children remain close and look out for one another. Left to mourn are his 2nd wife Shirley, his best friend and companion Cristine Gilbert, daughter Jackie (Jack Pipia), sons Patrick, Brian (Mona Staples), and Allan, grandchildren Nancy, Mackenzie, Isaiah, Ashley, Brooklyn, Makenna, Cooper, and Charlie. Sisters Marion (Laurie Nugent), Joan (Randy Wells), brother John (Maxine) and many extended family members. He was predeceased by his parents Stephen & Florence, his sisters; Marie (Murray McNutt), Margaret (Gerry Lee); Kathleen (Jim Connolly) and Imelda, 1st wife Judy, and his son Gregory Jason Staples.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the Dialysis Nurses and staff for taking very good of Gregory during his stay.

A celebration of Gregory's life will be held at Country Haven Funeral Home in Corner Brook on 16 February from 1-3 followed by a prayer service.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Kidney Foundation, a cause close to his heart.
