Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Gilbert John Baldwin announce his peaceful passing in the arms of his loving family at Western Memorial Palliative Care Unit at the age of 85 on December 11, 2021. Left to mourn with fond loving memories is his wife Shirley of 59 yrs. His daughters, Crystal (Trent) and Kelly (Trace) and son, Bob (Judy). Grandchildren: Destiny (Michal), Brody, Tyler (Michelle) and Leanna. Great Grandchild: Callie and a number of nieces and nephews. Sisters Maude (Ben) Knee, Frances Brake (Selwyn), Doily (Don) Penny, Ruth (Harry) Saunders, Peggy (Tom) Hussey Brother: Dan (Ethel) Baldwin, Sister in Laws: Anita Baldwin and Violet Mitchell. Gilbert is predeceased by his parents John and Gertrude Baldwin, his sisters Ida (Selby) Gough, Laura (Bill) Mercer, and his brothers Walter Baldwin, Dave (Barb) Baldwin, Malcolm Baldwin, and Archie Baldwin. Gilbert lived a life filled with joy, love and laughter. He had a spark that lit up any room he was in; his laugh and love of life were infectious. Never without a smile, Gilbert will be missed by his many friends and family. Gilbert was an avid boater, he volunteered with the Canadian Auxiliary Coastguard, he enjoyed travelling with his family and loved meeting new people from around the world. Gilbert welcomed everyone into his home. Born in Cox's Cove in 1936 Gilbert worked on the Bowater Tugboats, he operated heavy equipment throughout NL, Ontario, Labrador and retired from Syncrude Canada Ltd. as a crane operator in 1992. In keeping with Gilbert's wishes cremation has taken place with no visitation and à service will be held at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Cathedral in Corner Brook with Dean Catherine Short officiating on Tuesday, December 14th, at 12:00 pm. Due to covid, masks, ID, and vaccine passports are required. An interment service will be held at Mount Patricia Cemetery at a later date. Donations in Gilbert's memory can be made to Daffodil House in St. John's or to St. John the Evangelist Cathedral in Corner Brook. The family would like to give a big thank you to the Doctors, Nurses and staff of the Palliative Care Unit for their care and compassion.
