Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gerard “Gerry” Aloysius Murphy, who passed away at Western Memorial Hospital in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, on June 1st, 2026, at the age of 66. Following his diagnosis in the fall of 2023, Gerry fought a hard battle with cancer. Throughout it all he was resilient and optimistic. His positive attitude was admirable and often commented on by family and the many health professionals he met along the way.

He leaves to mourn his three children, Sarah (Jacob), Erin (Colton), and Benjamin (Jessica). His mother, Maxine. His brothers and sisters, Marlene (Darrell), Glenda (Trent), Darren, Lori (Joe), Michael (Kim), and Alan (Edlyn), and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and extended family. He was predeceased by his father, Michael, and his grandparents Leander and Margaret Humber and Aloysius and Josephine Murphy.

Gerry was born on March 7th, 1960, in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, where he spent most of his life. The oldest of seven children, Gerry quickly took on the role of all things big brother – a friend, a prankster, and a protector. Following graduating from Regina High School, he worked at the Bowater Papermill before pursuing a successful career in sales. He moved on to work with the Canadian Base Operators and had the opportunity to see more of the world when he was stationed in Nunavut and Kandahar. He then found his way back to Corner Brook where he picked up his knack for sales and finished out his career working with Air Liquide before he retired in 2024.

Gerry loved many things, but at the top of the list were rock and roll, hockey, spending time with his friends, cooking good food, and enjoying time at the cabin in Dancing Point. He also loved to carry on and have a good laugh. Whether it was dressing up in ridiculous outfits, pranking his siblings, or saying something funny to break the tension in a room, telling jokes and being foolish was Gerry’s way. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the many doctors and nurses who cared for Gerry, and the staff at Western Memorial Hospital in the comfort care unit for their kindness, care, and compassion. The family would also like to thank the staff at Country Haven Funeral Home for their support and care during this difficult time. Finally, the family thanks Gerry’s close friends who showed him unwavering support – drives to St. John’s and the hospital, fundraisers, and so much more.

Following Gerry’s wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be a visitation taking place for family and friends at Country Haven Funeral Home from 2:00pm to 4:00pm and 7:00pm to 9:00pm on Sunday, June 7th. A celebration of life will take place at 10:00am on Monday, June 8th, in the Country Haven Chapel with Father Edward Terry Officiating. Interment to follow at the Mount Patricia Cemetery. Gerry also loved animals, so in lieu of flowers and in memory of their family pet, Chip, a donation can be made to the NL West SPCA.
