Gerald Hayward Sharpe passed away peacefully on June 17, 2026 in Corner Brook, NL, at the age of 80.
Gerald is survived by his dear wife of 59 years, Marg (Margaret Bishop); his children, Trent (Amy), Tracey (Paul), Jason (Julie), and Jamie (Andrea); and his cherished grandchildren, Christian (Caroline), Stephanie (Brett), Nathan, Samuel, Thomas, Gabrielle, Sophia, and Andrew. He is also lovingly remembered by his brother Glenn (Julia); sisters Helen and Evelyn (Bill); sisters-in-law Helen and Grace; brother-in-law Mac (Barbara); special family members Jennifer Parsons and Karen Whelan (whom he thought of as daughters), and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Gerald was predeceased by his parents, Minnie and Boyce Sharpe; his brother, Ron; and brothers-in-law Larry, John, and Roy.
Gerald was born in Corner Brook on March 22, 1946, and was lucky to meet the love of his life and best friend, Marg in 1966. They married on June 17, 1967, and spent 59 years to the day in joy, companionship, and quiet devotion. They lived for 50 years on Spencer Street, raising 4 children who Gerald was fiercely proud of.
Gerald spent many years with Oceanex, proudly serving as a manager overseeing the shipment of goods to and from the Port of Corner Brook. He approached his work with dedication while contributing to the community he loved.
Gerald’s favourite time of year was autumn when the leaves would change colour and he would head on his annual rabbit-catching trips to Taylor’s Brook. He treasured the quality time with his family, and made many memories that were recounted for years afterward.
In retirement, Gerald found great joy in gardening, a passion he eagerly passed on to some of his children. He was always ready to offer advice and encouragement, particularly on how to grow the biggest, straightest carrots.
Gerald cherished the little dog that was a gift for Marg one Mother’s Day. He carried Mia in his pocket everywhere he went, and he always found comfort in the thought that one day they would walk together again.
Above all else, Gerald loved his family. He was happiest when surrounded by those he loved, sharing stories, laughter, and life's everyday moments.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Western Memorial Regional Hospital and the Palliative and End-of-Life Care Team in Corner Brook for the compassionate care and kindness shown to Gerald and his loved ones during his final days.
In following Gerald’s wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be no formal visitation or funeral service at this time. Services will be announced at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, a donation may be made in Gerald’s memory to the Cancer Care Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador, or a charity of one's choice. You may also honor him simply by planting a patch of vegetables in your own garden and thinking of him as they grow.
