Gerald William
Hartley
August 16, 1953 – June 25, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Gerald William Hartley share news of his peaceful passing at the age of 71 in Corner Brook, NL, with his loving family by his side.
Born on August 16, 1953, in Corner Brook, Gerald was the son of the late James and Edna Hartley. He is predeceased by his brothers Tom and Jim, and his sisters Helen and Margaret.
Gerald shared 44 wonderful years of marriage with his devoted wife, Suzan Marie (Buckle). Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and countless memories that shaped their family and touched the lives of those around them. Suzan was not only his wife but his best friend and partner in every sense.
Above all, Gerald was a proud and loving father to his three daughters—Chrystal (Shannon), Jennifer (Rick), and Kelly (Thomas)—and the best Poppy to his five cherished grandchildren: Cohen, Anna, Rikki, Sidney, and Nova. His family was his greatest joy, and he treasured every
moment spent with them. His gentle spirit, steady guidance, and warm heart will remain with them forever.
Gerald is also lovingly remembered by his brothers and sister: Leo, Joseph (Joan), Edward (Theresa), Richard (Sharon), and Isabelle, along with long-time friend Margaret Roche and many close friends who held a special place in his life. Known fondly as "Arch" to his friends, Gerald touched the hearts of all who knew him with his quiet strength, generosity, and kindness.
Gerald proudly served as a Lieutenant Commander (Navy) in the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve, dedicating 37 years to a career defined by leadership and commitment. He was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration Medal in recognition of his long and honorable service, and he made a lasting impact on hundreds of people—both young and old. A lifelong supporter of the Sea Cadet movement, he first joined the 184 Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Curling in 1969 and continued to lead and mentor youth with unwavering commitment. After retiring from military service in 2018, he worked with the Canadian Forest Service Division of Natural Resources Canada, a role that allowed him to enjoy the outdoors he so loved.
His passions included spending time with family, especially his grandchildren, as well as hunting and fishing with his brother Ed.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Slipp, Dr. Grant, and the dedicated nurses and staff of Unit 5D and the Palliative Care team at Western Regional Memorial Hospital for their exceptional care, kindness, and compassion. A special thank you to Father Terry, who offered comfort through his many visits and prayers.
Gerald will be forever loved and remembered as the best dad his girls could have ever asked for. There will be a visitation taking place on Friday, June 27, 2025 at Country Haven Funeral Home from the hours of 7-9 PM, from where the funeral service will take place at 10 AM on Saturday, June 28, 2025 at the Most Holy Redeemer Church, Corner Brook, with Father Edward Terry officiating, cremation to follow with interment to take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Crohn's and Colitis Canada.
