Garfield Elliott

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Garfield Elliott, who died on September 2, 2026, at the age of 88.

Born and raised in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Gar was fiercely proud of where he came from. In his younger years, he was very athletic, with skiing being one of his greatest passions. He also loved fishing, moose hunting and Ski-Dooing, and had a lifelong appreciation for music and old cars.

Some of Gar’s happiest memories were made at George’s Lake, where he embraced the outdoor life he loved so much. Rabbit catching, Ski-Dooing and cutting wood filled his days there and, in his own words, they were “the best days of his life.”

In more recent years, while living in Orono, Ontario with his daughter and son-in-law, Gar often joked that he and Gladys had become “the bird watchers.” He loved the river that ran through the property, especially watching the salmon run. It was a peaceful way for him to spend the last few years of his life, surrounded by nature and the people he loved.

Gar’s strong work ethic began early. He joined the Air Cadets at just 12 years old and, at 18, entered the Militia, where he went on to become a Sergeant. He later began his career at Bowater’s pulp and paper mill in Corner Brook, after his determined father made sure he got his foot in the door. From there, Garfield worked his way up through hard work, determination and dependability. He spent nearly three decades at the mill and took great pride in the fact that he never missed a day’s work before retiring at the age of 58.

Music was another important part of Gar’s life. He played both the accordion and harmonica and was the last standing of the family ‘musicians’, as a cherished part of the Langer family gatherings for many years. Gar also appreciated life’s simple pleasures — good company, a good story, and, of course, a drop or two of whisky.

Garfield is lovingly remembered by his wife, Gladys; his daughter Lisa Spurrell and son-in-law Mark; his son Bill Elliott and daughter-in-law Lori; his grandchildren Ashley, William, Jenna and Sadie; as well as his nieces, nephews, extended family and to many friends to list. He is also survived by his sister, Cora Walsh.

While our hearts are broken to say goodbye, there is comfort in imagining the welcome waiting for Gar — reunited with his parents, his sister, his brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and so many family members and friends who went before him. And we like to think there was one very happy four-legged friend there waiting for him too.

Gar lived a long life filled with hard work, family, music, the outdoors, and the things he loved most. He leaves behind a lifetime of stories and memories that will continue to be told.

He will be deeply missed and forever loved.
