Emma Olive
Higdon
September 5, 1925 – May 28, 2022
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Emma Olive Higdon (Young) announce her passing in Corner Brook at the age of 96 years. Emma was born in Birchy Head, Bonne Bay; the fourth of ten children born to George and Frances Young. She worked for many years at Kearsey's Bargain Center on Broadway and in the clothing department of the Co-op store on Main Street. Emma loved tending to her flower garden, picking berries, painting anything that needed painting, playing cards, and travelling around in the summer to different Newfoundland communities with her sisters and two daughters.
Left to mourn her passing with fond and loving memories are her two daughters, Delphine Brake (Corner Brook), and Barbra Higdon-House (Deer Lake); her son, Kenneth Higdon (Corner Brook); her sisters, Myra Bennett (Joe), and Cora Hann; sister-in-law, Eva Young; her seven grandchildren: Stephen Brake, Michael Brake (Brenda), Joanne Brake-Bond, Jennifer Brake (Adam Chafe), Rayna House, Alison House, Mark Higdon, and his mom Jocelyn Higdon; two great-grandchildren: Alexander Brisson and Matthew Bond; as well as many nieces, nephews, and acquaintances whom she met in her long lifetime.
Emma is predeceased by her husband, Noah Higdon (1976); her grandson, Lee Higdon (2003); her siblings: Roy (Elsie), Mack (Dora), Ned, Rex, Ruby Parsons (Bill), Margaret, and Florence Locke (Jim); and brother-in-law, George Hann.
The family of Emma would like to thank the dedicated staff of Western Memorial Regional Hospital Restorative Care and Palliative Care Unit for your exceptional care. Also, thank you to Dr. Tim Griffin who was so gracious in accepting Emma as his patient several years ago, and who brightened many of her days when she was ill. Thank you to Myra and Joe Bennett who were always there for her when Noah died and whose many, many invitations to Bonne Bay helped Emma stay in touch with her childhood home and her larger family. Last but not least, a special thank you to Diane Parsons who lovingly and kindly baked many cakes for Emma when a cup of tea and a piece of blueberry spice cake was good for whatever ailed her; and to all the people who kept in contact with her and us, especially Cora, by enquiring as to her well-being over the last few years.
As per her request, cremation has already taken place in her arrangements with Country Haven Funeral Home. Her ashes will be laid to rest on Friday, June 3, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Mount Patricia Cemetery with The Very Rev. Catherine Short officiating. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Emma's memory to a charity of one's choice.
