Edward
Thistle
January 3, 1937 – September 14, 2024
The family of Edward George Thistle are saddened to share the news of his passing on September 14, 2024 at Western Long Term Care Home in Corner Brook, NL.
Edward was born in St. John's on January 3, 1937, the second youngest of eight, to William and Ella Thistle. He loved his family, and like his siblings, excelled in sport. Ed's favourite game was hockey and he played for the Guards Athletics Association and the St. John's Caps. He would go on to play in many leagues and was recognized for his skill and passion for the game.
He worked at Woolworth's then Woolco in St. Johns before returning to get his GED and teaching degrees. Ed's dedication to youth is evident in his involvement in many school and youth related groups. He coached hockey and power skating for many years and was involved in the Virginia Park Vaulters, scouting and cadet movements.
Making education fun was important to Ed. He taught at many local schools, but also had an opportunity to teach in Labrador, Thailand, and Qatar. With Blanche by his side, they travelled the world and there were few places they didn't see.
Growing up in St. John's on Field Street, Ed had two lifelong friends. Merv Andrews (deceased) and Sully (Owen Sullivan) with whom he had been friends for over 75 years. Many phone calls discussing hockey and baseball were had, as well as Christmas Eve visits to both families.
Ed leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his son Brent and grandchildren Michaella, Noah, and Mia. Sister-in-law Brenda (Clyde) Kelleher-Flight and Brother-in-law, Kel (Golda) Kelleher. Also, Zafar Bhatti, who was like Edward's own son. Special acknowledgment of the care provided to Ed by Clyde and Brenda while he resided in Lanes before moving to Corner Brook..
Ed is predeceased by his wife Blanche (nee Kelleher) and his parents William and Ella Thistle, and six siblings; Cyril (WW2), Bern, Bruce (Nick), Shirley, Helen, and Marina.
A special thank you to close friend Nicola Penney for your love and care over the past years.
Thanks to the staff of Balsamview Long Term Care Unit who treated Ed like he was their own. The exceptional care and compassion will never be forgotten.
At Ed's request, cremation has already taken place. A celebration of his life will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Canada.
