Douglas Steward
Macwhirter
November 26, 1938 – December 30, 2025
Douglas Steward MacWhirter, born November 26, 1938, in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador, passed away peacefully on December 30, 2025, at Western Memorial Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loved ones.
Douglas was the son of the late Peter MacWhirter and Susan (Maidment) MacWhirter, and the beloved husband of Kathleen Young-MacWhirter. He was a man deeply connected to nature and will be fondly remembered for his love of hunting and salmon fishing at his cabin in Dancing Point, on "Doug's rock." Music was another great passion of his life—Douglas had the rare gift of being able to sing and play nearly any instrument, though the guitar was his favorite. He also dearly loved the Toronto Maple Leafs, his favourite hockey team.
He was predeceased by his brothers; Walter, Gorden, France, his sisters; Gertrude, Eileen, Mane, and Minnie.
Douglas is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife Kathleen Young-MacWhirter; his children Jackie (Bob) Baker, Todd (Connie) MacWhirter, Jamie (Vanessa) MacWhirter; grandchildren Janelle, Jasmine, Shania, Sasha, Broc, Avery and Cody; his special sister Joan Murphy and sisters-in-law Jean MacWhirter and Olga MacWhirter; his brothers-in-law Lewis (Sadie) Young, and Robert (Gloria) Young; and his sisters-in-laws Ruth and Shirley. He will also be deeply missed by his many great-grandchildren, extended family members, and friends.
Douglas leaves behind a legacy of music, love for the outdoors, and cherished memories that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Whitten, Doug's home care team, and the healthcare staff at the Palliative Care Unit for their compassion and kindness.
There will be a public visitation at Country Haven Funeral Home, 167 Country Road, Corner Brook NL. on Monday January 5th 2026 from the hours of 1-3pm. The funeral service will take place at 3PM. With Rev. Jocelyn Cook officiating. Interment to follow at Mount Patricia Cemetery.
Donations in Douglas's memory can be made to the local foodbank.
