Douglas (Dougie)
Kenneth Whiting
February 21, 1950 – November 1, 2025
It's with great sadness that the family of the late Douglas Kenneth (Dougie) Whiting announce his passing (after fighting a good fight) at Western Long Term Care Palliative care unit on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at the age of 75 years.
He leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories his loving wife Carolyn Ann Payne. Fur baby Molly. Sister Marie Whiting and Brother-in-law David Swanson (Banff, Alberta). Sister-in-law Maureen and Brother-in-law Paul George (Corner Brook, NL). Sister-in-law Janice Payne and his special niece Sarah Flight as well as many cousins, friends and many relatives.
Doug is predeased by his parents; Kenneth and May Whiting and his inlaws; Thomas and Olive Payne.
Doug was always an outdoor adventure' and always up for a challenge. He was an accomplished defenseman for the Oshawa Generals. Unfortunately at the time his size prevented him from being an NHL player with the Boston Bruins. He remained a true fan of the Bruins.
Doug first job was a typesetter for the Owen Sound newspaper. His dream job came in 1975 as a commercial helicopter pilot. Doug's duties varied from firebombing, to hunt camp transport, Hydro long lining and celebrity transport from the Northwest Territories to Newfoundland and Labrador, he was sought out as a most proficient pilot.
He had many countless adventures as anyone who knew him well. He could recount his stories of the sky. He received recognition of the "Pilot Safety Award" for 15,000 accident and violation free flight hours in the helicopter presented by "Helicopter Association International".
Flying brought him to Corner Brook where he met the love of his life Carolyn Payne. Two of them enjoyed snowmobiling, atving and the great outdoors. Doug had been known to enjoy a few bubblies on more than a few occasions by the campfire. They renovated their cabin on North Lake to make an off-grid paradise. They spent countless weekends there, winter and summer filled with hospitality and friends. To name a few; Wendell and Penney Janes and Glen and Mary Swartz who were a great help and comfort to us.
Doug has a great love for hunting and fishing, he was a great marksman and a persistent tracker. He once dropped a moose early morning from his cabin in his P. J's, now that's a story.
His sister Marie always said "He could be feisty, opinionated and stubborn but he was always most fierce defender". Rest in peace big brother.
Doug and Carolyn would like to give a heartfelt thanks and recognition to Dr. Mottay, Dr. Brazil, Dr. Gould (Pulmonary Team), Dr. White, Dr. Pieroway and especially the nursing and housekeeping staff at the ICU and Palliative care at Western Long-term care.
At Doug's request, cremation is to take place. There will be no formal visitation or funeral at this time, to be announced at a later date. There are no flowers by request, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Western S.P.C.A in memory of Doug. Eulogy by his brother-in-law; David Swanson.
