Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Donna Sylvia Randall (Sylvia Madonna Butt) share the news of her passing.  Donna died on December 21st, 2024, at the age of 80 years, at the Western Long-Term Care Home in Corner Brook, NL, after a long battle with dementia. This terrible disease took her away from us, a piece at a time, over her last 10 years.

Donna was born on Aug 19th, 1944, to Beatrice (nee Payne) and Augustus Butt in Mt. Moriah, NL. She was raised in a family of six girls; Donna, her four sisters, and a niece. Donna grew up with lots of cousins and extended family nearby. Donna moved to Ontario where she met Bruce in Toronto, whom she later married at 21, and was a widow at 34. She lived most of her adult life in southern Ontario, where she worked at many jobs including Canada Post, factory work, food service, she owned her own convenience store, and was the co-owner of a fish & chip restaurant with her sister-in-law. She loved her life in Ontario with the Randalls, who were as close to her as her own immediate family. Donna was handy with a sewing machine, and had made some clothing, but her favourite hobby was knitting. She was an excellent cook too. She enjoyed having company over, and she loved a good time and a laugh; she had a great sense of humour. She was a strong advocate for animals, and those who could not advocate for themselves. Lisa, was her most cherished and loved person in the world, until the arrival of her grandchildren, Caelin and Kaede; she absolutely adored them and being a grandmother. Donna returned to Newfoundland with Lisa, Bob (her favourite son-in-law) and the girls, when they moved to Corner Brook. Donna was also called Madonna, Aunt Don, Aunt Rat, Granny, Sevida, Cheese Puff, and Nanny. Lastly, Donna could be described as loving, kind, stubborn, funny, saucy, empathetic, feisty, hard working, generous, giving, a fashion icon, and most of all, strong.

Donna will be fondly remembered by her beloved daughter: Lisa (Robert); her granddaughters: Caelin, and Kaede; her sisters: Margaret (Alfred) Gosse, and Mercedes (Paul) Ruth; and her special niece/sister Catherine Butt; the Randall family, including her brother-in-law: Fred Randall; many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. She will also be missed by her dogs, Lily and Sarah. They all had a special place in her heart.

Donna was predeceased by her husband: Bruce; her sisters: Mavis (Howard) Poe, and Gertrude (George) Barnes; her parents: Beatrice and Augustus Butt; her sisters-in-law: Elsie (Basil) Johnston, June (Elmer) McDonald and Molly (Gary) Zoschke.

Donna's family would like to thank all of the wonderful caregivers in Birchview, at Western Long-Term Care Home. They would also like to acknowledge the caregivers at the Bungalows, especially in Bungalow #2, where Donna lived and was cared for, before moving to WLTC. Their compassion, kindness and laughs will never be forgotten.

Donna's life will be celebrated with a gathering of family and friends at Country Haven Funeral Home, on Country Rd, Corner Brook, NL, on Friday, December 27th at 1 PM, from where the funeral service will take place at 2 PM in the Country Haven Chapel. Interment to follow at Mount Patricia Cemetery.  As expressions of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Donna's memory to your local SPCA.

For those who are unable to attend, the funeral service will be livestreamed via Country Haven Funeral Home's Facebook page.
