Although Cyril was born in Corner Brook in 1929, his family moved to South Dildo, NL when he was a young child. He often recounted stories from those years, some lean years but also lots of happy times. He met his high-school sweetheart Emily at a young age and he determined quite soon that she was the woman for him. When she left to go to work at the hospital in Corner Brook it wasn't long after that he moved there too. He started work at the West Coast Bakery on the delivery routes. He spent 43 years there, moving up through various positions. It wasn't uncommon to hear him called the "Bread Man". Brian remembers fondly that when hugging his Dad he smelled like fresh bread.
Cyril and Emily married and started their family, quickly building a home on Edinburgh Street, where they raised a loving and boisterous family of four boys. Cyril certainly knew his way around a hammer and saw, turning his hand to most anything carpentry related. He helped his sons build homes, cabins and many other wood related projects for family and friends. He passed that gene along to his sons and grandchildren. He took the boys fishing, often walking miles into their favorite ponds or putting the little boat out for a day on the water. They rarely came home empty handed. Cyril and Emily loved to go camping and on summer weekends they were rarely home. In the early years the family tented but eventually they moved up to the comfort of travel trailer (the first one he built himself in their backyard) and camping at many of the Provincial Parks across the province.
As the boys grew up and moved on, Cyril and Emily discovered the perfect camping place, Father Kellys Pit, on Birchy Lake. They parked their trailer there every spring and spent 40+ years enjoying the company of old and new friends. How many times did we hear that "Mom and Dad were gone to the PIT." They boated across the lake to pick berries, maybe throwing the line out to catch a fish or two before heading back to the pit for a boil up with friends. We know many stories and laughs took place around those evening fires. It was a wonderful time in their lives and they enjoyed it to the fullest. In later years Cyril and Emily joined the Pasadena Seniors Club, where they played darts and enjoyed many a pot-luck with the crew. They loved the fun and camaraderie this group offered.
Cyril wasn't a large man in stature, but he was "larger than Life" to his family. His love for Emily and his family was obvious for all to see. He was proud of the home and the life they built together, giving credit to Emily as she was the glue in the mix. Having the "kids" home together was always a happy time for Cyril, nothing better than Family gatherings at the table. He was a long-time member of the Salvation Army. His faith in God and his belief in working hard for what you get are traits we all admired. His belief that he was going to be with his loved ones helped sustain those of us left behind at his passing. He will be missed.
"To live in hearts, we leave behind is not to die."
