Baxter Benjamin Lockyer passed away peacefully with family members beside him on June 9, 2026, at the age of 81. Born on December 9, 1945, in Tacks Beach, Placentia Bay, Newfoundland. Baxter relocated to Corner Brook Newfoundland in his teens where he spent his life building a profound legacy of hard work, kindness, and deep devotion to those he loved.
Baxter was the devoted husband of the late Joan Lockyer, with whom he shared 65 beautiful years of marriage before her passing. He was an incredibly proud father of Edward, Kenneth, Richard, John, Susan, and David. He truly did everything for his family, always putting their needs above his own and providing a life filled with security, laughter, and unconditional love. In good times and in bad, he loved nothing more than being surrounded by his wife and children. A widely respected figure in the community, Baxter began his career as a salesman and later operated local convenience stores and arcades. He eventually found his true calling as the successful owner and operator of his own trucking company, Baxter Lockyer’s Trucking. Alongside his family, Baxter spent decades working in the industry, earning the deep respect of colleagues and turning professional acquaintances into lifelong friends. He seemed to know absolutely everyone; it was nearly impossible to go anywhere with him without running into an old friend or making a new one along the way. During his years in business, Baxter used his success as a tool to bless others. Together, Baxter and Joan quietly helped countless families in need, ensuring they had food on their tables and the financial support to get by. His quiet generosity never went unnoticed, leaving an indelible mark on everyone he helped. Throughout a lifetime of countless connections, he never spoke a bad word about anyone, choosing instead to see the absolute best in every person he met. Baxter also loved spending time at his cabin, this was his true getaway where he fished day in and day out and spent quality family time boating, water skiing and swimming.
Baxter was predeceased by his beloved wife, Joan, his parents, Benjamin and Beatrice Lockyer and his many wonderful brothers and sisters. His memory will live on in the vast community of family and friends whose lives he touched.
He is lovingly remembered and survived by his children, Edward (Maureen), Kenneth (Kim), Richard (Linda), John (Denise), Susan (Glenn), and David (Brenda); his grandchildren, Sheena, Nicole, Brayden, Dana, Sarah, Jessica, Brianna, Liam, and Ethan; and his great-grandchildren, Burke, Cooper, Sofia, and Leo. He also leaves behind his "two loves" his sister-in-law Bridgett and niece Jocelyn- who brought him so much joy and laughter with their constant visits, along with a large circle of extended family and friends.
There will be a visitation taking place for family and friends on Sunday, June 14th, 2026 at Country Haven Funeral Home from the hours of 2-4 PM, with cremation to follow. A celebration of Baxter’s life will take place at 2 PM on Monday, June 15th, 2026 in the Country Haven Chapel. Interment to take place at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, because Baxter truly loved flowers-and would never want us to mow the lawn so he could see them all grow and feed the bees-the family warmly welcomes floral tributes for his service. A donation may also be made in Baxter’s memory to a charity of one’s choice.
