Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Basil John Payne, who left us peacefully on February 15, 2026, surrounded by his loving family at the Palliative Care Unit of Western Memorial Regional Hospital. Basil was 76 years old.

Born on November 14, 1949, and lovingly known as "Bas," he was the beloved baby of the family—a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. Basil's presence lit up every room, and his warmth and humor left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

He was predeceased by his cherished parents, Edward and Miriam Payne; sisters Audrey (Roy) Penney and Alma (Shirly) Lovell; brothers Claude and Kevin Payne; brothers-in-law Taylor White and Cyril Wheeler; and sister-in-law Melvina Payne. He now joins them in peaceful rest.

Basil leaves behind a lifetime of love in his devoted wife of 51 years, Pauline (Wells), and his treasured son and "best buddy," Jimmy (Natasha). He was the proud "Pop" to two precious grandsons, Nicholas and Blake, who will forever hold his memory close to their hearts.

He will be deeply missed by his brothers Gordon (Elsie) and Lyle (Doris); his sister Eva White; sisters-in-law: Viola Payne, and Anita Payne; his special sister-in-law: Beverly Wheeler (Steward Noseworthy); his brothers-in-law Marvin (Judith) Wells and Bruce (Ivy) Wells; and his parents-in-law Jim and Violet Wells, who will always cherish their bond and his lifelong kindness.

Basil will also be lovingly remembered by his special nieces Lori Lynn White, Sandra Wells, and Jillian Hardy, special nephew Paul Payne, close friends Terry Wells and Bob Brace and many other nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and former colleagues. His steady love, laughter, and stories will remain with them always.

Over the course of a long and dedicated career, he spent 50 years working in the construction industry. His work often took him away from home to places like Bermuda, Labrador, Fort McMurray, Ontario, and communities all across Newfoundland. In the final years of his career, his dedication was devoted to the valued members of the Operating Engineers Union Local 904 as a Business Manager. He took great pride in his work and valued the connections he made along the way.

While his career was rewarding, his heart was always at home in Cox's Cove. Basil lived his entire life there, raising his own family on the same land where he spent his childhood. Deeply committed to his community, he served as treasurer of St. Nicholas Anglican Church and volunteered with the Marshall Moores Recreation Committee, the Cox's Cove Fire Department, the Western District School Board, and later the Rainbow Seniors Club. He represented community pride and believed strongly in giving back to those around him.

Above all, family was everything to Basil. He shared 51 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life and best friend, Pauline. Their life together was built on love, commitment, and shared experiences, forming the foundation of the family he held so dear. He held the utmost pride for his son Jimmy and all of his accomplishments. He doted on his daughter‑in‑law, Natasha, and treated her as his own. He cherished every moment spent with his loved ones and found particular joy in being with his grandsons, Nicholas and Blake, while creating memories that will be treasured for years to come.

Basil's life was one of compassion, humility, and joy—a legacy that continues to live on in those fortunate enough to have known and loved him.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at St. Nicholas Anglican Church, Cox's Cove, on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, from 2–4 p.m. and 7–9 p.m. The funeral service will follow on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at 11 AM., also at St. Nicholas Anglican Church. Interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit at Western Memorial Regional Hospital.
